The Female Athlete

Considering form, technique and intention can make a huge difference in protection of the pelvic floor, whether or not you have pressure control related symptoms, such as urine leakage and/or pelvic organ prolapse and/or diastasis recti.  Many women suffer silently with urine leakage and/or pelvic organ prolapse, as a response to an increase in intrabdominal pressure (lifting weights, jumping, running) – and although your provider may have told you that is common for this to happen, it is not NORMAL and certainly not the way you have to live the rest of your life.  So many women stop exercising or significantly modify their workouts, fearing that they will make their symptoms worse, or simply because they feel it is too embarrassing to address.  No one should ever have to stop their fitness routine; there is so much you can do and learn to get back to reaching your fitness goals and moving without fear.   Learning different ways to control movement through breath, muscle recruitment, mindfulness and awareness can help you to change your mindset, your muscle memory and ability to generate and maintain tension throughout your core and pelvic floor, be symptom free and do what you love.
